Abuse

Most of the women with whom I have interacted with are single parents because of abuse. It took them years before they could leave the relationship because they were afraid or did not know how to or want to be alone.

They all thought that they were in love with their abuser and they he loved they, the reason for this they say is that every now and again he would show a softer side to himself and he would be amazing then at other times he would totally transform.

Most of this would have taken place without the children’s knowledge at first but then when they became old enough to understand they too were trapped. These women also all had one thing in common they would have forsaken their families because of these men and therefore had nowhere to turn or no one to help them.

Some of the things that they said that made them stay was that these men would tell them things like

§  If you leave me I will kill you

§  If you leave me I would kill myself

§  If you leave me you would never have peace

§  If I see you with another man or you have another man around my child I will kill all of you.

With the way things are going in today’s world they all stayed, the reason for this is we now see so many times on the news “Man takes his life and that of his children” “Man takes the life of his estranged wife and children”

Stockholm syndrome is a mental form of captivity where the victim sees their capture as their savior; the victims often feel empathy and sympathy towards their captives. They are built up by the individual to believe that they are loved then broken down and so repeated. Most of these women have never heard of stock home syndrome.

The law needs to take more seriously these women in reporting abuse, as soon as a report is made they should be referred to a social worker and regular visits should be made to the homes as well as to the schools of the children

  1. So true, nearly everyone knows someone who has gone through or is going through this...it's so common in our society and we have become desensitized to it. Glad that you are highlighting these issues
